Wet and threatening weather undoubtedly kept many people from attending the ofTieial opening ceremony ol' tlie Learn-to-S\vim Fool at Qhope Beach last Friday (Boxing Day). The bath, Avhich is a monument to tlie industry and effort of Mr F. Mahy who first sponsored it, is a substantial concrete structure built on the spit Avhich adjoins the picnic ground. A semi-circular paddling pool adjoins the western end Avhile the pool itself is surrounded a strong board fence enclosing dressing sheds and seating accommodation. The pool will lend itself adj mirably to carnivals and the like and should also be a permanent asset from an instruction point of view. At approximately 11 a.m. the Whakatane Boys' Band under the baton of Mir Mayo enlivened proceedings with a selection or two. This brought a fair crowd into the enclosure and Mr H .C. McCready, riding member for the district, was invited by Mr Mahy to perforin the opening cere mo 113% "I consider Mr Mahy lias acliievcd something really worth while in the construction of this Learn-to-Swim pool," said Mr McCready. "No one could, have met with more rebuffs than he, in the earlier stages, yet he stuck to his guns and almost as a lone bander succeeded in his purpose."
