PTE. L. G. HILL

Born at Port Chalmers 30 years ago, tliei fourth and tAvin son of Mr and Mrs M. Hill, now of Whakatane, fell in action in Libya on November 24, 1941. He Avas educated at the Port Chalmers. District High School and Avas a keen athlete being the holder of his school's medal for the best forward.

On leaving school he Avas apprenticed as a tinsmith and joining the Territorials served in that A'oluntary capacity for some years. In Port Chalmers he Avas prominent as a member of the Rugby and RoAving Clubs and Avon the 1929-30 President's medal, and for the 1928-29 season the Youth's Pairs.

Under the direction of the Rev. A. D. Honvell, of Edgecumbe, he came to the Whakatane district and worked on the land until he enlisted.

Pte Hill Avas prominent as a Bible Class member taking part in rallies fit Othope and he retained his Rugbj' Interest to qualify as a Rangitaiki Tunior Representative.

In June of 1935 lie married the eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Wilson, of Awakaponga, and volunteering for active service left "with the Fifth Echelon. He has a youngfcr brother serving who saw service In Greece and Crete. On receipt of the sad news the flag was flown at half on the Port Chalmers Town Hall, the Rowing Club and Naval Shed buildings in deference to his passing.
