Dear Sir,
Letters to the Editor must be clearly written on one side of the paper only and where a noro-de-plume is used the name of the writer must be included for reference purposes. The Editor • reserves the Mghi to abridge* amend or withhold any letter or letters. E.P.S. SLACKERS Sir,- —Referring to the article head- ' ed "Many Slackers" in the Xmas issue of the Bay of Plenty Beacon. It must be apparent to all that there is a reason for the refusals to sign the present prescribed form which I attribute to lack of confidence in some of the present Government administrators. When one examines the last war record of these gentlemen, is it any wonder i ~ the lack of confidence exists? Why not give a lead to the community and form a truly National Government, and place in charge of war activities those whose past conduct merits such positions? AVliat did the present government do tci the four Colonels w r lio had the courage: of their convictions to speak out openly regarding the inadequate defence ' facilities at a time when it should have been possible to procure; the necessary materials and weapons to place the country on a sound defence • basis? In the meantime T would suggest to Mir Burnett (E'.P.S. Controller)^ that he adopt more tactful and use?* ful methods, calling for volunteers and preparing a list of names of . these Avilling to offer their services and take the Oath of Allegiance to the King, but not sign the present form of enlistment. Yours etc., One of the so-called Slackers/ J. MULLINS, R.D. Whakatane. SUGGESTION FOR HOME GUARI> Sir, —We started cutting hay on Boxing Day, and are still in the throes. What about a hay-vstacking bee for the New Year? Here is a great chance to toughen up the town Home Guardsmen. The whole thing could be arranged easily enough— 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. route march, 9.30 a.m. till 2 p.m. haymaking, 2.30 p.m. till 5 p.m. route march home* Why ride if you can walk? Weather IJermitcing, Mr Editor, how does it appeal to you. Yours etc., - PITCH AND TOSS, Thornton. (We lack the courage to say! Ed).
