MONTH IN GAOL

THEFT OF FOWLS

offence: at taneatua

An echo of the epidemic of thefts of fowls which took place at Taneatua some weeks ago was heard in the local Court yesterday morning when Rene Maluku was sentenced to one month's gaol. Previously three natives were sent to gaol for similar offences and Matuku, who was known to be involved had avoided arrest by going into tlic Urewera Country. However, considering the trouble of pursuing the man too great and being confident of his return the police awaited their time, and this week Constable O. S. Rice "picked up" the culprit who returned to spend his sheaiing cheque. Two charges were preferred, one being the theft of nine fowls valued at £2 on August 24 and the theft of a further three on August 30, these being the property of William Alexander. Messrs G. A. Brabant and J. G. Mulholland considered that similar punishment should be meted out to Matuku as was to his accomplices and he was sentenced to' one' month in the Whakatane Police gaol.
