SCHOOL YEAR ENDS

OTAKIRI FUNCTION In spite of the unforseen early closing of the schools the annual breaking-up ceremony at the Otakiri School was held on Tuesday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of parents. Tlie proceedings opened with several items by the children of which the play "Little Red Riding Hood" was a tremendous success. j Mr Kedgley, the head teacher, | spoke of the work of the school during the past year and thanked the parents', staff and committee for their help and co-operation, which greatly assisted him in his work. Mr Kedgley also took the opportunity of thanking Mrs Spiers for her great assistance during his period at the school. The chairman of the school committee, Mr Baton, in making a presentation to Mrs Spiers, referred to her untiring efforts as infant mistress for the last five years. He said It was with great regret that the committee and parents heard that she was leaving the school. During this period Mrs Spiers had spared no effort to help bring the school to the high standard now ruling and, her absence would be felt by both staff and children. Mr Barton then presented Ml-s Spiers with a firescreen and cushion from the pupils.

Mr Barton also spoke of the departure of Miss Jamieson, who, though only being with the school for the past year had greatly endeared herself to all. He then presented her with a crystal vase. In replying Mrs Spiers thanked everyone for her present and said it was: with regret she was resigning.

Just tlien Father Christmas appeared with his bag of toys and de(ighted the primers with a present for each. The afternoon concluded with afternoon tea served by the ladies of the committee.
