PIG MARKET

ANXIETY PREVAILS

STATEMENT BY CHAIRMAN

In an interview with a representative of the Press Mr W. A. Phillips, Chairman of Diractors of the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association, Limited, said that owing to present circumstances there is evidence with producers of some uneasiness regarding the future outlook for the normal slaughter and marketing of their pigs.

"For this anxiety," said Mir Phillips, "there is no reasonable justification, since in respect of possible temporary delay in overseas shipment ample provision has been made to meet such circumstances, while in respect of markets an undertaking has been given by the Government which ensures to : producers a reliable outlet for their pigs at prices equivalent to last year's F. 0.8. rates.

"Quite apart from tliis," stated Mr Phillips, "the bacon curing industry will immediately after Christmas come on to the market for both their current and winter requirements, which will account for a very substantial percentage .of the total quantity of baconer pigs available.

"In view of these circumstances it will be seen," said Mr Phillips, "that there is no real cause for apprehension and that producers would therefore be well advised to pursue a normal course in the disposal of their pigs. Bearing in mind the disturbance which occurred in

March last when producers on a combination of false premises rushed their pigs to market and in consequence suffered a severe and quite unnecessary less, it is hoped that these observations may assist in avoiding a similar situation which subsequent events proved to be absolutely unwarranted."
