WHAT PRICE GLORY ?

Plunket Competition The winner of the Christmas Hamper competition organised bj the Plunket Society was C. Harris (Paper Mills) 1126, Mrs N. Skelton (846) being second.

THE release of the casualty lists resulting from the Libyan battle has meant- a sad and empty Christmas for many families in Whakatane and its surrounding district. The bitter price: of war is made the harder to bear by reason of its utter futility, and devilish wastage of life. All these thoughts must be occurring to the minds of those of our fellow citizens who have been bereaved in the war which is fast assuming proportions which eclipse any vious catastrophe that has ever overtaken the human race. To those who are the victims of the recent war losses, we extend our heartfelt sympathy, and warmest understanding of their silent suffering," well knowing that we are but echoing thq feelings of the community as a whole in so doing. May their grief be assuaged to some extent at least in the knowledge of the kindliness felt for them by their friends in both town, and country.

Donation to Red Cross An attractive Christmas, cake has been presented to the Red Cross for competition by Mrs W. P. Brown. A similar cake was last year and created keen competition.
