Engineers Parade The Home Guard Engineers will parade in the Borough Council yard, Commerce Street, at 6 p.m. this evening. Dangerous Telephone- Poles At an estimated eost of £5 the County Council has arranged with the P. and T. Department to> set hack the poles reported as being dargerous to traffic on the Tane-ntua-Ruatoki road. Tanks Getting Empty Householders who depend on rain water stored in tanks have been having "a dry time" during the last few days. The long period of fine weather has been good for haymaking but no good for replenishing the water in the tanks. Caledonian Society"s Competition The competition for the iced cake presented to the Caledonian Society by Mrs. Alec Robb of Edgecumbe for the purpose of assisting in the raising of funds for the band, resulted in H. H. Bell being the lucky winner. E.P.S. Road Construction The County Council has enlisted the whole of the council's staff in the E.P.S. as a road construction and patrol unit and it has also been ■decided that the county plant be recommended to the Vehicle Impressr ment Authorities for reservation for such work. Very Satisfactory Position That the position regarding outStanding native rates was very satisr factory was reported by the chairman of the County Council (Mr J. L. Burnett) yesterday when lie named the figure at about £300. In congratulating the clerk Mr Burnett remarked that in previous years the figure had been as great as £2000. Kind's Birthday The 46th birthday ef King George VI.. fell on Sunday. A holiday is usually observed for the occasion in Tune because of the proximity of the actual dale to' the Christmas holidays, but during the critical time of June, 1940, when the fall of the Low Countries and France brought the German army to the Channel, the holiday was abandoned. County Workshop Good progress hase been made with the concrete work at the County Council's new workshop.' The walls have been completed and as much of the floor as it is, practicable to put in at the present stage. Some work on the erection of a surrounding fence has also been carried out. An early start will now be made with the fabrication of the steel roof trusses.
County Works I would like- to state that the recent laying up of the traclcson shovels for repairs coupled with the fact that prior to that both machines had been tied up for varying periods with farmers' metalling works, the council's programme of works has of necessity been delayed somewhat. However, contracts will be proceeded Avith as expeditiously as possible. —Acting-county engineer's report. Egg Laying Contest In the Auckland Provincial E!gglaying contest local birds, are performing well. The teams of three hens are recording figures as follows individual weekly layings being given with totals to date in parentheses : White Leghorns (G.
