INSUFFICIENT DEPTH
WATER AT WHARVES
HARBOUR BOARD PROBLEM
For some time "tlie Whakatane Harbour Board lias been concerned regarding the lack of depth at low water at the wharf, loaded vessels raiding themselves aground. At Friday's meeting the Harbourmaster reported giving soundings taken. Captain Carey stated that the trouble was greatest at the downstream end of the wharf and considered a grab could remove the rocky substance on the river bed. The formation of the bed was not soft and would not scour by river action. Several suggestions were made by members Mr J. A. Mitchell remarking that the Board would be forced to face up to the work before long, [t was decided that an inspection be made and a method of deepening the river decided upon.
