NEW BUILDING
REST AND GARDENS PROPOSED
BOROUGH COUNCIL PROJECT
The town clerk (Mr D. V. Saunders) in a letter to Friday's meeting of the Harbour Board stated that the Council was considering a proposal to provide additional conveniences for both sexes in the vicinity of the western end Strand, and it was considered probable that with the co-operation of the Board a project to provide rest facilities and combine beauty and utility might be possible. The Board was asked to indicate on what terms it would be prepared lo transfer or lease a suitable area of frontage of say IS(> feet fronting the Strand continuation on the northern side as near as possible to tlie present built on portion.
The letter continued that with a suitable frontage and sufficient depth, an area could be laid out in lawns and gardens "with suitable sheltering trees and seats, the building being erected conveniently but unobtrusively. The Council considered the necessity for such an amenity was real and that such a scheme would commend itself to the sympathetic and liberal consideration of the Board.
Mr G. A. Brabant stated that such facilities were needed, but that he did not like the position chosen as the land was too valuable in the suggested location.
Other members agreed ami felt that the matter should be fully investigated, a committee consisting of the chairman and Messrs G. R. Kent, G. A. Brabant and C. T. Smith being appointed to make investigations. Present Facilities Criticised Mr J. A. Mitchell asked if anj supervision was exercised on the XJresent. facilites. He considered the condition of these disgraceful. Support was received from Mr C. Tickner, who said better supervision was required. The chairman pointed out that the supervision was the obligation of "the Borough. Mr Tickner: "Well it is not carried out."
