STORAGE SPACE DIFFICULTIES

The l'act that the Whakatane district war effort lias greatly increased production, and entails the Harbour Board having storage capacity for 1400 crates of cheese anil 5000 boxes of butter, has forced the Board to investigate the facilities olfering and alter present arrangements. In the course of an inspection held on Friday by the Board members it was found that because of the lack of storage space at present and because, of the fact that the Northern Steamship Company's service is not all it could be cheese is leaving Whakatane by alternative means. It was decided to take immediate action to remedy this by firstly extending the cheese and butter storeroom by 12ft to be done at the expense of the outwards shed. Goods Must Lifted Although reluctant to inconvcnience any local firms tlie members were also forced to the decision that in future consignors and consignees be asked to lift all goods and coment promptly otherwise demurrage charge, would be made. The members felt that every effort should be made to facilitate extra war effort. An inspection was also made of the floor foundations and it found that these were in order. Increased Shipping Service The Board further decided to request the Northern Steamship Company to institute a regular service of two boats weekly and so stagger the departure days so that loss of freight to boats would not result from the lack of storage accommodation. Dust Nuistance In view of the dust nuisance experienced at the wharf sheds it was decided to ask the Borough Council to assist the Board by giving an estimate of the cost of the sealing the approaches to the concrete wharf, and, if the work was authorised, to undertake it.
