EFFICIENCY ACT
MAY BE AMENDED
OBJECTIONS HEARD
The objections of the business community to certain aspects of the operation of the Industrial Efficiency Act was placed before the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce at Invercargill, the president of the Wellington Chamber, Mr R. H. Nimmo, told members at a meeting of the Chamber.
Mr Nimmo said that the Minister ol' Industries and Commerce (Mr Sullivan) was present and was most sympathetic. The Minister had gone as far as to say that the Government was considering amendments to the Act to meet the objections that had been raised. Mr Nimmo said lie believed these amendments would be passed during the next session of Parliament.
Mr Niimmo said he had pointed out that the present constitution of the bureau made insufficient provision for representation of the interests of those likely to be adversely affected by the operations of the Act. It was admitted that in time of Avar a certain amount of regimentation of industry was necessary, but the Act had been passed three years before the outbreak of war. Even under war conditions it was desirable that there should be some right of appeal to an independent tribunal. Mr Nimmo said he had also dealt with the question of representation, and had pointed cut that the whole machinery of the Act could be operated by civil servants.
