NEWS that the petrol allocation for the benefit of Home Guard members who find it impossible to attend parades without such provision, was cancelled on Tuesday last, has created grave concern at local headquarters. In the past something approaching 300 gallons has been drawn per month to enable the attendance at country parages to be maintained. A splendid standard has been achieved and we understand that as a result the administration files in Wha.katane are second to none. Now however, with the means of transport cut it is feared that it will be impossible to carry on. What we would like to suggest to the authorities is that a little investigation be made into the position of many users of private cars who in spite of all restrictions apparently seem to still obtain petrol for joy-riding and extended trips. A slight overhaul, too of the amount released to Government-owned vehicles might assist in in the general conservation before imposing so drastic a measure upon country units of the Home Guard. For-while parades in the city are not likely to suffer we maintain that units in the rural areas will be seriously handicapped, if not, entirely eliminated unless new methods are introduced to offset the lack of transport.
Edgecumbe Rainfall Mr Andrew McLean reports that 2.02 inches of rain fell at Edgecumbe during November in comparison with 5.92 for the stime month last year. The total for the eleven months is now 57.32 inches as against 52.19 in 194®,
