WORK OUTSIDE SCHOOL HOURS

A considerable degree of fatigue noticed towards the end cf the school day by a teacher at the Fitzroy School, New Plymouth, has been traced to apparent long hours of work done by some of the boys before and after school.
The fact that one boy was rising at 3.45 a.m. each day and working no less than 42% hours a week was discovered in the investigation, the results of which were placed before the Taranaki Education Board at its meeting recentlj*. The report sent to the board by the headmaster, Mr A. R. Robertsliaw, stated that a member of the -tafF of the school, Mr 11. V. George, had found that of the 46 boys in Forms I and 11, 25 worked outside of school hours, the average hours each week being 14 % for each boy The total wages earned weekly amounted to £14 Bs, in addition to which milk and cream to the value of £2 19s weekly Avas earned by the boys. The boy working 42hours a week rose daily at 3.45 a.m. daily, while three boys rose before 4 a.m., three before 5 a.m., and four between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m. Of the 20 boj'S working on school days, six worked more than 20 hours weekly, four worked between 15 and 20 hours; six worked between 10 and 15 hours, and nine worked less than 10 hours. Eleven of the boys were employed on milk rounds, six on newspaper runs, and three in shops, while seven cut lawns, and eight acted as golf caddies.
