For some time the Ohope Ratepayers' and Progress League and individual residents have been | pressing the County Council for road improvements at the beach, and at the October meeting the acting-engineer was instructed to prepare estimates of work suggested. A length of tar sealing AA T as sought to abate dust nuisance near the central picnic ground and at last week's meeting the estimate was giA'-en as folloAvs:— "The following is an estimate of the cost of sealing 11 chains of road 10ft Avide from the bridge at the foot of Ohope Hill to Kennedy's Store. The estimate provides for the preparation of a 6 inch base course of metal, graded up, Avatcred and compacted under traffic, folloAved by an application of M.C.3. hot bitu men blinded Avith 3-Bin metal chips, the spraying to be carried out by the Borough Council. Cost £170. After years it would be advisable to apply a second coat. Oliope Culvert at Ford: I submit herewith an estimate for the construction of a 4ft diameter concrete pipe culvert, with reinforced concrete apron and Aving Avails at either end, together Avith approach fillings. Length of cuh*ert 45 feet £355." Further Complaints At the meeting a further letter containing caustic reference to the state of the roads Avas recciA T ed from Mr T. P. DoAvling, avlio complained that, only a very small percentage of rates collected from beach property was spent at Ohope. Although members did not fully agree Avith the letter, they felt that not sufficient Avas spent on the beach and the letter Avas handed to the Works Committee for investigation. It Avas revealed in the acting-en-gineer's report that some Avork had been done at Ohope including the widening of the road near the Hostel.
