COUNTY HOLIDAYS

ARRANGEMENTS APPROVED

ONE: COUNCILLOR OBJIKCTS

A recommendation from the Finance Committee presented to this we'ek's meeting of the Whakatane County Council was that the December meeting be held on Tuesday, December lfi, instead of December 23, and that the January meeting be held two weeks later on Tuesday, February 10. The March meeting would be held on the usual dav —March 24. The suggestion continued that a special meeting be called if necessary and that the offices be closed from and including Thursday, December 25 to and including Wednesday, January 7. It was explained that the arrangement would permit the engineer and others to take annual leave, while the clerk and outside staff would be on duty. Cr H. C. MicC'rcady raised the only objection stating that a ' meeting should not be eliminated. The members were appointed to. do a job and should do it, he contended. Other councillors considered the suggestion a good one, as staff shortages made special measures necessary, and it was pointed out that the chairman would be watching the ratepayers' interests as usual and would, if necessary call a special meeting.
