THE FIRST SHOT FIRED
AS far as Whakatane is concerned the first, shot in the byelection campaign was fired from the Labour platform last evening- when a good representative audience followed the arguments of the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer in support of the candidate, Mr Charles Mills. The meeting has at least served to stir up a little more than the languid interest hitherto taken by the average dweller of the plains. From the Eastern end of the electorate come the: faint rumblings of the activities of the Opposition and it is pleasing to note from to-day's announcement the series of meetings to be held in this district by the National candidate:, Mr W. Sullivan. Possibly by next week we will feel the growing force of the political battle, though there does not appear to be a chance of anything like the keenness displayed in the Waitemata by-election three months ago. Judjging from the enquiries from outside,, the interest taken in the progress of the campaign is more pronounced elsewhere than within the Bay of Plenty electorate itself.
