SILK STOCKINGS
SUPPLIES FOR DOMINION
ORDERS FILLED IN BRITAIN
Although an official announcement 'from London states that, following the release of 3,000,000 pairs of. sills stockings before Christmas, no more will be produced before the Avar is won, a Dunedin importer stated that he had been able to place fairly substantial orders for stockings in Great Britain and it appeared that the present shortage in New Zealand would be eased considerably by next March "My firm has been able to secure satisfactory quantities of artificial silk stockings in Britain," he said "aad they should arrive from March onwards. If our representatives in Britain can secure the necessary export licenses we shall be able to import putre silk stockings as well. II would appear that when these supplies reached the Dominion there will be a substantial improvement in the position. Even if we cannot secure pure silk stockings, the artificial lines will be satisfactory for most women. "It is probable in any case tha' women Avill haA r e to become reconciled to Avearing artificial silk hose," he continued, "as pure silk yarn conies, from Japan, and until the Japanese trade embargo is lifted no more yarn Avill be obtainable eitliei here or in Great Britain. I have no idea what stocks of silk yarn are' in XeAV Zealand, but they cannot be inexhaustible. "It is difficult to believe the statement from London in the light of recent advice receiA : ed from Britain," he stated. "Silk is certainly used for parachutes and other Avar materials!, but Ave hfrve been able to place orders and only require export licenses to ha\'e the goods sent out to us. If they arrive safely these supplies should augment the NeAA* Zealand-made stockings and ease the position considerably. In the meantime, however, there Avill continue to be a shortage of stockings, but fortunately there is every prospect of an improvement in the position."
