PIONEERS FAREWELLED
TRIBUTE TO GREENUP BROS.
LARGE GATHERING AT
AWAKERI
Well over one hundred residents of Whakatane and district gathered at the Awakeri Hall last week honour Messrs F. and A-. Greenup, who after 50 years farming on the Plains are retiring to live at Auckland., Half a century ago these pioneers first came to and took lip land
on the "swamp."
In those days the "swamp"' was true to name and the Greenup Bros., who are the last of the original settlers who came from Canterbury related many and varied interesting experiences of the early days. In this task they were ably assisted by the many speakers, the ti:end of each toast being the relation to memories of "the good old days." During the course of a lengths toast list, the chairman, Mir L. W. Luxton, called on Mr Barr to make a presentation to each of the guests, congratulating them on the life of achievement and conveying the thanks of the farmer of to-day foi the wonderful work done by the pioneers. Their task had been a difficult one indeed and it was gratifying that at last they should have achieved that well deserved rest.
Mr Barr also paid high tribute to the guests of the evening who would, by their departure, leave a conspicuous blank in the ranks of the farmers of the Plains.
