Local and General
Chamber of Commerce To-night Members of the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce are reminded of the. meeting to be held in the Borough Council Chambers this evening. Church of England Benefit The Anglican Church Bazaar is to be held to-morrow in the Parish Hall. In the evening there will be a concert starting at 7.45 p.m., when the Boys' Band will be one of the features of the programme'. Wandering Stock The Borough Council's Inspectoi reports that he has been giving constant attention to the wandering stock nuisance recently and thai during the past month only one cow required to be impounded. This was released later. New Power Lines The erection of new secondary power lines in Merritt Street has been completed and proceeding is the erection of the new cables in Douglas Street and the Goulstone Road section so that the supply may be connected to Crete Street. Bobby Calf Truckings! It is estimated that when the pool closes shortly approximately 18,000 bobby calves will have been railed from Whakatane this season in comparison with 18,800' last year. The price this year will be better than expected owing to the better values of skins. Unit Omitted 1 . In the report of the Memorial Service held on Sunday last on the Domain to mark the passing of the late Lieut. A. G. Hultquist, M.P., mention of the parade of the W.W.S.A. was inadvertently omitted. The members of this service turned out in a large number. Whakatane Rainfall Reporting yesterdas', Mr H. Muscutt states that he had recorded rain on eight days of this month, the reading yesterday morning at 9 a.m. being .77 inches bringing the total so far this month to 1.58 inches. The aggregate for the year to date is 48.08 inches. National Savings The "ball indicator" on the Post Office made very little movement last week indicating that Whakatane was very much short of its quota by £2*34 for the National Savings Campaign. The first two days of this week have been somewhat similar and unless a vigorous effort is made the town will for the third consecutive week fail in the task set it. Delicacies for Maori Troops Many Maori delicacies including pipis, mussels and edible seaweed have been sent in parcels, from Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty to members of the Maori Battalion in the East. The pipis and the seawee'd •were collected and gathered at Maketu and the mussels near Waihi. Last Christmas when the members of the battalion were in England, the bill of fare differed little from what the troops would have enjoyed in New Zealand, and since their arrival in Egypt they have told in letters what foods would be most appreciated. The shell fish and the seaweed were both sun-dried before despatch, while pork had been steamed and preserved in its -own fat before being sealed in tins.
I Tall Men Not Wanted Men for New Zealand's first Armv Tank Brigade have now been mobilised. Many of the men are to be technicians and other with specialised mechanical and engineering knowledge which can readily be adapted to the driving and maintenance of tanks. In addition to these, of course, there will be the "nonexpert" recruits for training as members of the crews and for various other tasks included in any army formation. An interesting feature of the mobilisation will be that big ♦men will not be suitable for manning the tanks. When officers and non-commissioned officers were chosen a height limit of sft lOin was imposed, and though the needs of the brigade would not allow the restriction to be continued for technicians and others, such heights as 6ft or over will probably cause some men to be passed over when they are called up.
