YOUNG FARMERS' CLUB
UPON the eve; of the visit to this district of the Dominion Organising Secretary of the Young Farmers' Club, we feel it a favourable time to comment upon the splendid nature of the organisation which is paving the way for better and more enlightened farmers of the future. Seven years ago when the movement was first inaugurated it was felt that there was an urgent need, for educating the average young farmer's son along the lines of modern scientific farming. Too many young men from the country districts it was felt were gravitating to the towns, leaving the agricultural labours in the hands of the drifters from the larger cities. Thus the brains from the rural districts appeared to be in danger of being replaced by the lower types of intelligence from the cities. The founding of the 'club' movement was largely with a view to correcting this state of affairs and well it has succeeded. All/phases of farming are dealt with by the movement, which is kept under the sympathetic surveillance of the Department of Agriculture. To-day it is becoming increasingly necessary to enlist new members at a younger age than heretofore, and as a result boys of school and High School age are being interested. At the meeting to-morrow evening at Edgeaumbe an outline of the policy to be adopted by the. Club in war-time will be given and it is hoped that all who can will make a point of attending.
