WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

WAIMANA MEETING

The November meeting of the Wai-mana-Nukuhou Women's Institute was held in the hall last Wednesday. There was a good attendance of members, Mrs G. Hewitt presiding.

The singing of the Institute song opened the meeting, and then members observed two> minutes silence in memory of Lieut. A. G. Hultquist, who has passed away in the Middle East.

The routine business was dealt with, a letter being read from Private H. Spanhake thanking the Institute for a parcel received.

A letter was read from the Matron of the Opotiki Hospital asking for tray cloths, members agreeing to the appeal.

Miss S. G rover was enrolled as a neAV member. The Golden Thread was given by Mrs I. Savage who read a paper on the earthquake in Sicily, and Mrs N. Clark gave an interesting talk on Switzerland. The Roll Call was well responded to.

The day's competitions were ai follows: Best Flower, Mrs K. Bell 1, Mrs Wykle- 2, Mrs Stevenson 3.. Best Vegetable, Mrs Black 1, Mrs F. Bell 2, Mrs Stevenson 3. Nightdress, Mrs F. Bell 1, Mrs I. Savage 2, Mrs Hewitt 3. Sponge cake without butter, Mrs T. Ward! aw 1, Mrs Hewitt 2, Mrs Gillanders 3. It being National Day, community singing followed and appropriate songs being sung, the singing of the National Anthem closed the meeting. MATATA MEETING The Matata Women's Institute held its October meeting on Wednesday 22. Mrs Miagee presided over a very good attendance and welcomed visitors and friends. The roll call foi the day was "Books women should read." The debate "Large or small Fain, ilies." caused some amusement, the "large family" winning by popular vote. During the afternoon a ''bring and buy" was held to raise funds for the Makogai Leper Fund, the •sum of £1 being collected. The competitions were as follows. Best-cut bread and butter, Mrs Ansel 1. 1, Mrs ll.'Withy 2. Toffee, Mrs *Cummings 1, Mrs Anscll 2, Miss Burt 3. Vase of white flowers, Mrs Anscll 1, MHss Burt 2. WHAKATANE MEETING

The November meeting was held in the Parish Hall on Tuesday, November 4. In the unavoidable absence of Mrs Berry, the vice-president, Mrs N. Matthews, took the chair. Before the commencement of the business members stood in silence as a mark of sympathy to Mrs Hultquist in her recent bereavement. Mrs Sutcliffe was elected to the position of vice-president. The resignation of the secretary, Mrs Cairns, owing to sickness, was accepted with regret; and Mrs F. Brown was appointed secretary in her place. Members were reminded of the Institute Day at the local Red Cross shop on Friday, November 7. An invitation from the Taneatua Institute to attend their birthday on Tuesday, November 11 was received . The Drama Festival for the district is to be held at Edgecumbe on Tuesday, November 18. Dressmaking classes arc to start early in the New Year. Mrs F. Brown, Whakatane representative, read an interesting report of the recent Council meeting held at Waimana. A collection was taken in the hall in aid of the Leper Funds and brought the satisfactory amount of £2 14s. Talk by the Rev. H. Hogg Mir Hogg gave a most interesting talk on his experiences in South America some years ago, and promised to return at an early date and continue his address. This was great, ly appreciated by the members. The roll call for the day followed "Characteristics of Another Nation" and brought a number of cjuaint customs to light. A wall competition, "All Nation's Flags" was wen by Mrs Sutcliffe. The next meeting of the Gardening Circle of the Institute will be hekl at Mrs Hill's residence on Tuesday. 11th inst. Competitions resulted as follows: Scones, Mrs Lysaght. Flower Mrs McIsaacs. Peasant apron. Mrs Wheeler.
