At the sitting of the Appeal Board held at Te Puke on Wednesday,. DArcy John Daly, schoolteacher, appealed on conscientious grounds against service with the armed forcesMr R. Seymour, Crown representative. asked appellant if he would have any objection to healing the sick* Appellant: No. Mr Seymour: Would you do any combatant service? Appellant: No. Mr Seymour: Would you tend wounded soldiers? Appellant: Yes. Mr Seymour: Would you be prepared to serve if guaranteed nothing but medical duties? Appellant: No, In answer to a further question appellant stated that he did not regard any lawful employment, sucbt ns schoolteaching, in the same light as soldiering. Mr Seymour: Why is a soldier's Job unlawful? Appellant: I consider that the word of God prohibits anyone from being a soldier. Asked by Mr Seymouir if he knew of any passage in Christ's teachings which forbade military service, appellant quoted "Thou shalt not kill" and "All they that take the sword shall perish with the sword." Mir Seymour: Christ told his disciples that they would be persecuted and killed. You have agreed to aid the sick and wounded. Why would this be different if you were in uniform? The appeal was dismissed, the board stating that it was not a true case of conscience appeal.
