FIRE BRIGADE SUCCESS
WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S DANCE
WINTER SHOW HALL CROWDED
That its reputation of thoroughness was maintained is sufficient to describe the dance held on Wednesday at the Winter Show Hall by the Whakatane Volunteer Fire. Brigade.As in their Brigade duties the mem— hers of the service "made a job of it/' and one of the largest crowds seen this year gathered to spend a happy time. The ballroom was indeed a gay setting, the firemen having artistic, nlly arrayed it with; red, white 1 and blue streamers and coloured lights: Fn this pretty setting dancing com tinned until an early hour. " The supper room, was also attractlvely arranged and under the capable leadership of Mrs F. H. Stewart, Mfte A'lf Hayter and Mrs S. S. Shaplcy the members wives and helpers dispensed a supper which spoke well for the culinary abilities uf Whakatane. The support given by the public to this effort of the Brigade's was beyond all expectations according to the Superintendent, Mr F. H. Stewart, who said that he and his Brigade were grateful to the general public of Whakatace f<>i the recogw mtion accorded their services. Superintendent Stewart, in briefly addressing the gathering, extend, ing thanks to all who had assisted the effort and pointed out that the funds derived from the function would be well sjient. He said that of seventeen members of the Brigade thirteen were serving in the Armed Forces and were being "looked after in every way." The ranks had been filled with enthusiastic recruits and the public could be assured •of tho best service possible. Mr S. S. Shaplej'-, chairman of, the Fire Board, was called upon by the "Super" to present trophies won during the year. Mr Shapley, prior to the presentations emphasised to the gathering the fact that the Brigade was voluntary and that the members gave their services without reward. He then made the following presentations: The Bereton Shield Avon at the Soqth Auckland demonstrations (Captain H. Allen, Foreman J,. Mliles, Firemen A. Wiggins, J. King, G. Davey. Patterson Efficiency Cusp, won by Fireman J. King for the best kept equipment. A two-year bar was also presented to Foreman J. Miles. His Worship the Mayor also* paid tribute to the,efficiency of the Bri r gade reiterating Mr Shapley's remarks regarding the voluntary service given. While speaking Mr Barry took the opportunity of making a presentation on behalf of the Borough and County Farewell Committee handing the "Whakatane Wallet" to Gunner P. Sliea tlier, and extending to him best wishes of the people of the Whakatane county. Under the efficient eontrol of Mr "Taffy" Atkinson the programme of old and modern dances continued to the music of the Victory Boys* Band and a Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Hea;d and Mr Sumner — another similar novelty by Miss Hansen and Mr Angel, while "Spot" waltzes found Miss Raymond and partner and Miss Black and Mr Cruse the lucky couples. »
