M.P.'S PASSING

THE LATE LIEUT. GORDON

HULTQUIST

A TRIBUTE BY MR G. H. BURNETT

The passing of Gordon Hultquist. the respected and esteemed Member for Bay of Plenty, will come as a great shock to his many friends in the Bay. I hasten to add my few words of tribute and respect to the memory of my okl colleague. I was closely associated with Gordon Hultquist through the 1935 and 1938 campaigns as many of the issues connected Avith our respective - electorates were identical. During the 1935-38 session Ave occupied the same office together in Parliament Buildings, and during this period Ave were closely associated in all matters affecting the Bay of Plenty gen- • erally, of which Tauranga formed j the northern area. il Avas greatty impresesd Avith my jL-te friend's, enthusiasm and zeal for district and many times I have seCr-i lmh 'Work at his desk right tKrcmglr the night to overtake the matters affecting his extensive • electorate. His industry and ability to quickly grasp and assimilate intricate and difficult situations and at prompt and definite decisions AA T ere characteristic of the man. He was to me- a staunch friend and a loyal comrade and I look back on my ■ close associations Avith him in the New Zealand , Parliament as one of the; happy periods of my life. His genial personality and cheery voice Avill be sadly missed in Par, liamentary circles and the Bay of Plenty have lost an able and industrious representative aa 7 1io gave them of his: best. When the call of duty came "Gordon" ansAvered it without hesitation and to-day Ave mourn the loss of one of N'eAV Zealand's gifted sons, who after bravely taking part in the terrible dangers of Greece and Crete, virtually gave his life for his country. The sympathy of the Bay of Plenty will go out to his stricken Avife and ' little Mavis and his sorroAving parents in Auckland AA'ho have lost a devoted husband, father and son. "Requiescat in pace." /MEMORIAL SERVICE PLANNED COMBINED PUBLIC GATHERING Steps are being taken by the local branch of the "Labour Party to- hold ■If possible a combined Memorial Senice, to the late Lieut. A- G. Hultquist in the Domain on Sunday Aveek. Details of a more positive nature will be announced later as they are planned, but it is understood from the local president, Mr Major, that ■ every effort will be made to' make the .service a comprehensive one Avliich will be open to all sections of the -community to attend.
