"This is one of the breaches the law frowns upon," said Mr E. L. Walton, S.M., when inflicting lines on Andrew Brown and Kirke Athole Payne in the local Court yesterday. Brown was fined £7 10s and Paj r ne £5Stating that Payne was a taxi driver. Sergeant M. Farrell related that on September !?4 defendant had set out with 2 native girls, picked Brown up at the Paper Mills and continued to' the Matata Hotel. The 12 bottles of beer had been purchased and the four occupants of the car continued to the Thornton beach where all except two bottles of the beer had been consumed. Mr Farrell continued that both men had been frank when questioned and, while Brown had been previously convicted for a similar offence, Payne bore a good reputation. The 1 Magistrate imposed a heavier fine on Brown in view of his previous offence. Publican Charged " The licensee of the Miatata Hotel. Herbert Anderson, was charged with serving liquor after hours, the charge arising from the' previous case. Sergeant M. Farrell stated that the publican had served the two men with twelve bottles of beer which had later been supplied to the Maori Ivomen. Mr Farrell continued that the licensee bore a good, reputation and there had been no complaints regarding the conduct of the hotel, there being little business done there at present. For the defendant Mr G. Otley stated that the licensee had been at the hotel for the past 11 years and had conducted the house to the satisfaction of both the Police arid the Licensing Authority. A fine of £1 with costs 10s" was imposed. Breach of ' Ord'er Joe Hona was charged with being found in the Commercial Hotel while prohibited and also with having procured liquor. Remarking on his record the Magistrate imposed a fine of £2 with costs £1 13s on the first charge and £2 with 15s costs on the second. For a breach of an order, Rang) Kotua, Avho Avas found in the Whakatane Hotel, Avas fined £1 Avitli costs £1 3s.
