RACING NOTES

WON WAVERLEY CUP

Taurangi, a leading fancy lor the New Zealand Cup, to be run on Saturday, won the Wavcrley Gup with 9.7 on Labour Day. However, a line as to her chance ol' victory in the two miles event couild not be gained, as the mile and a quarter on a somewhat heavy track took 2 mtfris 12 sees. She may be benefited by the gallop, and strip pretty lit for the big event. A DOUBLE WINNER The Cambridge bred Kentucky, by Vermeer —Lady Lois, raced in lus first season .by Mr M.i Moodabe, of Auckland, won a sprint double at the Wellington meeting. Consequently his weight for the Canterbury Stewards' Handicap has been increased by Olbs to 9.10. The Riccarton track will be much faster than that at Trcntham, so Kentucky will undergo a severe test on the day. WAIKATO SPRING MEETING The Waikato Racing Club has received record entries for its spring meeting this month. For the Waikato Hack Cup, in which the best hacks of the province will compete, no less than 55 nominations have been listed. It is more than probable two divisions will be necessitated. BEAU VITE TO RETURN! Whether Beau, Vitc will contest the Melbourne Cup under the truly welter weight of 9.10 will not be known until the morning of * the race. After the Cup meeting he is to return to New Zealand if shipping accommodation can be arranged, otherwise he is to be allotted another brief holiday at the famous Bacchus Marsh. SUSPENSION OF JOCKEYS The luck of W. J. Broughton and E. V. Dye on Labour Day could not be said to have been in. For interference the first named was suspended by the Wellington Racing Club for three months, while the latter had a six months suspension imposed by the Waverley Club for foul riding, in grabbing the reins of another candidate, during the running of a race. Probably both riders will appeal against the sentences. In the meantime there are two capable riders less for owners in the north to select from. A GOOD TWO YEAR OLD Dominate, a winner at Trentham, is owned by Mr R. Stewart, of Beau Vitc fame. In Wellington sporting circles it is considered that the colt will be quite the equal of the Dominion's best performed juveniles when they meet at New Year. HAWKE'S BAY REPRESENTATIVES Hawke's Bay is to be represented in the Auckland Cup by Rakanui, Lambourn and Yogi. RE-COMMISSIONED In Canterbury the Beau Pere four year old Ivingsman has again made his appearance on the training tracks. As a two year old he showed galloping ability, but as he was then growing "very fast he was put out of work, and given a proper chance to furnish. ICELAND SPAR The Chriistchurcli favourite for the New Zealand Cup, Iceland Spar, is reported to be moving short in his work, and his Cup admirers are not feeling too. confident in tiie meantime. TOTALISATOR TURNOVER Up to and including the Rotorua meeting last week the totalisator figures for the season, of which nearly three months have expired, show an increase for the Dominion of £43,189. GALLOPING WELL The Te Rapa trained Chary, is executing brilliant work on the tracks, and is expected to be racing very prominently in the near future. In a mile race at Ellerslie he finished close up to the leaders, and every gallop should improve him. A BRILLIANT THREE YEAR OLD Legal, who got on the roll of winners this month in brilliant style, is a three year eld gelding by Solicitor-General from Desirable by Paper Money. He was bred by Mrs W. Pi., Stead, of Hawke's Bay. and after the- Trentham National Sides was secured, by Mr I>. Webster, of Wellington. Desirable was bred by Mr E. D. Kdkins, oi Kiri lviri. A PROMISING JUVENILE The well known Takanini mentor, i-'red Smith, lias quite a collection of two year olds in his team. Estimated to be tlie most promising at the present time is Kentish, by Soli-citor-General from Sky Song, owned by the Paeroa sportsman, Mr P. LJivnnn.
