1942 MAIZE CROPS
MORE ACCURATE ESTIMATE
needed
FARMERS WON'T REPLY
That it was of little use circularising farmers to ascertain the amount of maize they estimated they would produce next season was claimed by Mr A. H. Honey field, who said that very few would furnish a return. "You might get two replies from 150 circulars—the farmers are fed up with statistical returns," he said.
Mr W. A. McCracken had suggested that a more accurate estimate was required, the Department's figures being much less than that of the Primary Production Council. Mr MtC'racken said the Department's figures were on the conservative side and a careful watcli should be kept on the position.
Mr K. Runciman said the Native Department hoped to increase its acreage of maize and he suggested that details of all crib measurements should be obtained. A suggestion was made that the firms could possibly obtain the information from the farmers and furnish an estimate that would improve the position, and this will probably be done.
