♦ j ! ACTING-ENGINEER'S MONTHLY ! REPORT The Acting-County Engineer, Mr R. O. Tompkins, reported to this week's monthly meeting of the County Council as follows:— Road Construction: The formation of Hodge's Road Extension (Boynton's Access), some 2.1 chains in length, is in progress, the angle dozer being used for this work. The formation of Omataroa Riding Roads at Poroporo is in hand, Leader's Road, Meihana Tahawera's and Reuben Toma's being formed up to date, while Pahou Road and Langenbergcr's Offshoot Road arc in hand. The metalling of these roads, together with Wano's Road, will be undertaken as soon as river and other conditions permit. It would appear advisable to give Reuben Tamo access from Langenberger's Offshoot Road. This would involve the formation and metalling of an additional 15 chains of road at an estimated cost of approximately £60. Road Repairs: Metal patching repairs have been carried out to Scl, vyyn, Powell's, Pckatalii Station, Stanley, McLean's, Railway West and Railway East Roads. Pumice has been spread on the Awakeri-Te Teko Road, and banking carried out. Maintenance gravel lias been spread on Bell's, Lowe's and Anderson's Roads. Slips have been cleared from Stanley, Ross, Wainui, Ohope Hill and Mataliina Roads. Repairs were effected to the worst places on McIvor Road, shortage of funds on this road preventing further work from being done. The approaches to two bridges on Awaiti Road have been improved. Concrete slabs for the protection of the Wainui Mudflats filling have been carted to the site, and same will.be placed in position when suitable labour is available. A fortnight's work was put in on Sladdcn's Track. Ctilverts and Drains: The following culverts have been installed:—l3oynton's Acccss 2>lft/18in and 36' ft /12in,\Leader's Road 21ft/12in, Langenberger's OfTshot Road l.lft/12in, Downarctfs 30ft/12in, O'ld's 6'ft/loin, Foster's Gft/12in. A bad Avashout at a culvert on the Omeheu Road, completely blocking the traffic, Avas repaired. A culvert under the Old State HigliAvay, Taneatua Road lias been lowered, and a culvert at the lower end of Old's Road lifted and re-laid. Some ten chains of drain through C. Old's property, Tancatua, has been cleaned and deepened, the cost being shared equally by C. Old and the riding. Repairs Avere effected to culverts on Edgecumbe Station, Otakiri Soldiers,' and GricA*e's Roads. Miscellaneous: Classification discs have been erected on roads as instructed . Metalling of farmers' roads at Waimana, Nukuhou and Taneatua has been completed. Similar Avorlt on the Plains is now in hand and should be completed shortly. No. 8 Planer (L.< Grey) is in for major repairs, No. 9 petrol unit taking its place. Tenders for maintenance metalling throughout the County haA r e been advertised and will be submitted to this meeting of the committee. A considerable quantity of galvanised W.I. piping for Edgecumbe and Matata Water Supply Scheme has come to hand. Alain Road 'direction signs liaA r e been erected on the Te Teko Plantation Homestead Road. Surfacemen haA 7 e been generally instructed to report on matters requiring attention in areas under their control. Transport Meeting: As instructed I attended the meeting of the Licensing Authority Avith reference to the proposed amended cartage schedule. I have to report that nothing was finalised at that meeting and that the authority assured me that the Council Avould rcceive adequate notice of any proposed alterations. On behalf of the Council I registered a protest against the proposal put forward by the Carriers' Association for the elimination of the rights of Local Authorities to contract Avii.li individual carriers.
