KIKUYU A MENACE
EXCEPT FOR SANDY AREAS
The Auckland Farmers' Union is still following up the allegations that have come from the Bay of Islands in regard to Kikuyui grass, and the suggestion that it should be declared a noxious weed. In a further letter to the Minister of Agriculture the Union says: "The position seem? to be that Kikuyu is a very useful grass on sandy country. On good farming land, however, it is generally said to be a curse, which quickly displaces good pasture grasses. One O'f the worst features is that frost will kill it overnight, leaving the stock suddenly deprived of grazing. The Union Executive suggests thai the Minister take immediate steps to prevent planting, except in sandy areas, until a full investigation has been carried out."
