County Finance. Accounts totalling £5535 16s 10c. were passed for payment at yesterday's meeting of the Whakatane County Council. Engineer's Inspection Work. During last month the ActingCounty Engineer travelled 1289 miles in the course of his inspection of county works. County Appointment. Mr W. Scott, of Ruatahuna. has been appointed a licence (including drivers' licenses) agent on commission for the Ruatahuna district. First Offender Charged. A Maori, who failed to appear was charged in the Whakatane Court yesterday with being drunk and disorderly. As a first offender he was convicted and bail was estreated to the extent of 10s. Farmersi Roads. At yesterday's meeting, of the County Council the acting-engineer, Mr R. Ov. Tompkins, reported that the metalling of farmers' roads at Waimana, Nukuhou and Taneatua had now been completed. Similar work, on the* Rangitaiki roads was now in progress, and should be completed shortly. Ragwort Eradication. The County Council intends to commence cutting ragwort in certain areas of the Poroporo and Te Teko districts during this month. No poisoning can be undertaken as the council is unable to obtain supplies of poison, the period 1 of the shortage being stated to be indefinite. E.F.S. Medical Supplies. The County chairman reported at yesterday's meeting that he had arranged for the Council lorries to transport medical supplies to the two depots approved by the Hospital Board and to also transport such supplies back to the Hospital, when and as necessary. The cost would be charged to the County E.P.S. The chairman's action was confirmed. Caledonian Working Bee. Busy members of the Caledonian Society gathered at the King Street Hall last Saturday for the purpose of effecting the initial steps towards the rebuilding scheme and other improvements. The section has been 'planted with a suitable hedge and a certain amount of excavation work has been completed ready for the enlargement of the building. The hall itself has, undergone a complete spring cleaning. Reciprocation Private Glenn Hay den has forwarded us from the Middle East a copy of the magazine 'Parade' which is the weekly illustrated official printed for the benefit of the men in Egypt. Printed in Cairo it is well composed and is edited jointly by Major Ruston and Capt.. C. Mason. The copy has been forwarded the BEACON' we understand in response to the number of local papers which have been sent regularly from this office. Opotiki Airman's Injuries. Leading Aircraftsman Gordon F. Forbes, son of Mr Alex. Forbes, who is at present residing with his son Roy Forbes, Manawahe, is progressing satisfactorily from the injuries received when a plane piloted by Flying-Officer Jack Rua Coatl? crashed at Stratford aerodrome, the pilot being killed. Gordon Forbes received numerous cuts about the face and a bone was broken in his ankle. At the inquest concerning the death of the pilot, L.A. Forbes, who was in the rear cockpit of the plane, said he remembered the machine taking off and making a normal circuit of the aerodrome, but from that stage his memory was a blank. His brother, Roy Forbes, expects to commence his Air Force training in the near future.
