EDUCATING THE MODERN CHILD
WHILE we join warmly in the applause which no doubt greeted the very sound and interesting* address given by the Inspector of Schools., Mr S. Mills last week, we are minded at the same time of the very far from perfect conditions in whicdi our own primary children are being schooled. A little practical interpretation of those: same hifhsounding principles on the part of the Education Department would constitute a very tasty morsel to the parents of the younger pupils attending the Whakatane school. By this we mean that if the long promised improvements to the Primary School house were but put into active fulfillment we would feel in better form to relish and appreciate the splendid, emphasis made by the speaker on the progress' of modern eduqation. While we do not wish our criticism to be in any way associated with Mr Mills personally, we feel that until we know that half a dozen unsuitable buildings are: not needed as 'temporary' class rooms, and that children are no longer required to sit on dusty floors because of seating shortage, or that passages and alleyways are needed to accommodate classes, we cannot be expected to grasp fully and intelligently the gist of what the Inspector has to tell of the higher, better and healthier methods allegedly employed by the Department.
