"ROBIN HOOD" IN CRETE

GENERAL LEADS GUERILLA

BANDS

' GERMANS HARRASSED

A Cretan Robin Hood, General Mendaks, is leading the bands of British and Anzac soldiers who are carrying on guerilla war against the Germans in Crete, states the London Daily Miail of August !30. A traveller who has escaped from Athens said that the general led a band of 300 English and Anzac troops in one raid which resulted in the capture of an entire German courtmartial. The Germans, he said, were held as hostages—presumably. Cretan women join in the guerilla fighting with the same vigour as the soldiers, the traveller said. He added that General Mendako's bands are doing great damage to the Germans.

It has been reported that 1000 British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers are in the island. They escaped capture by going into the hills when Imperial forces evacuated Crete, ancl since then have linked up with Greek peasants and soldiers in constant guerilla warfare against the Germans and Italians. One report declared that the guerillas have recaptured the whole island with the exception of the three cities of Candia, C'anae and Retimo.
