THE BOY SCOUT MOVEMENT
Cartage Rates
A remit from Te Kuiti dealt with at last meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Union Executive referring to South Auckland cartage rates was in opposition to the "unreasonable suggestion of fixing a blanket rate over the whole of the South Auckland area, as suoii ° ru: must prove inequitable." The remit was approved.
THOSE who are interested in the progress of the Boy Scout movement in the Bay of Plenty will have read with regret the Commissioner s report that troops were falling ®ff and tha,t there was an urgent need for stimulous in order to regain the old standard of membership. Native troops have suffered particularly, and approximately there are 120 less scouts this year than last. The root of the trouble is not difficult to discover. It is definitely the result of so many eligible young men who were natural leaders going overseas on active service. The problem now is how to hold the remaining troops and supply the requisite number of Scoutmasters. Paroa, Poroporo, Taneatua, Maketu have all gone into recess under the strain. Young men who are interested in boys and desire their welfare are therefore needed most urgently in order to help fulfil the objective of the Gover-nor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, who suggests that all boys in the Dominion should become scouts. Further enquiries on this matter should be made with the S.M. Rev G. V. Thomas.
Hardy Swimmers. The more hardy swimming enthusiasts have in past weeks been taking a "dip" at Ohope, although it has been noticed that their exit from the surf was not long delayed. The beach has begun to attract more week-end visitors, while Otawairere Bay has been very popular, being well sheltered and the greatest benefit from the sun being obtained.
