Evidence that the scarcity of oranges is not- confined to Auckland was furnished in reports from Ghristchurch and Hamilton that small quantities of sweet oranges from Kerikeri were sold by wholesalers at over 40s a bushel ease. The message from Ghristchurch stated that additional quantities of those oranges were wanted. Auckland was not so fortunate and the city markets were bare of supplies with the exception of four cases of oranges from the Avondale district, Which realised 25s a case. A trader stated that in normal times, and in fact up to about three weeks ago, Avondale oranges were selling at from 4s to 8s a case, with a few exceptional quality lines realising 12s. No Kerikeri oranges have been offering in the local market fo.r over ei week, reported one firm.
Handicaps under which dctcctive staffs in the major cities have been wcrki!hg> particularly when investigating offences against women and girls, are likely to be somewhat lessened by the 10 women police who have now commenced their training. The Commissioner of Police, Mr D. I. Cummings, said that the women would be a very valuable adjunct. They were a fine type, both mentally and physically, and had been coached for four months on a great variety of subjects, including physical training and such branches of the law and regulations as were considered necessary to enable them to carry out their duties. They will not wear uniforms, but will be attached to the detective staffs.
