THE FRIESIAN BREED
NEW ZEALAND ASSOCIATION
TRANSFER OF PEDIiGREE BULLS
At a meeting" of the Council of the New Zealand Friesian Association held on 24th June, 1941 it was resolved that transfers be not granted to any bull born on or after the Ist July, 1943, unless his dam has reached the following production standards:—■ G.G.R. Yearly Test^—27s.slb fat at 2yr; 3121b fat at 3yr; 348.51b fat at 4yr; 3851b fat at Syr or over; or C.O.R. (305 day test), Government 0.H.T., or Special Pedigree Group Herd Test.—2so.slb fat at 2yr; 2871b fat at 3yr; 323.51b fat at 4yr; 3601b fat at Syr or over.
The above standards shall be increased by o.llb (l-10th lb) fat for every day the cow is over the minimum age in the 2yr, Syr and 4yr old classes.
Explanation
The above resolution means that' of the bulls born on or after Ist July, 1943, tlie only ones eligible fcr transfer will be those whose dams have been tested and have records nt least equal to the above standards. The Council has taken this highly important step in an endeavour (1)' to encourage the testing of all pedi* gree Friesian cows and (2) to ensure that Friesian breeders will supply to dairy farmers only bulls withi butter fat backing—bulls that will definitely improve the productivity of the herds in which they are used* Systems of Testing The following are the only systems recognised:— 1. Dairy Division, Department of /Agriculture. (a) Certificate of Record Test (G.O.Tv.) 365 and 305 day (milking permitted two> or three times daily) * Fee for first cow placed, on test each) season £8 8s (£5 5s will be refunded by the New Zealand Friesiafl Association). For each additional cow, £3 3s. (b) Government Official Herd Test (G.G.H.T.) 305 days. This test requires that at least one cow in the herd be placed on C.O.R. test after which any number may be put on G.O.H.T. Fee, 5s per cow on G.O.H.T.
2. Herd Improvement Association (N.Z.. Dairy Board) Special Pedigree Group Herd Test:
Tn addition to the ordinary monthly visit of the testing officer at least one check test will be carried out each season. The testing officer irt such cases will make a 48-<hour test instead of the usual 24-hour test.
Members of the N.Z, Friesian Association who are testing under Herd •Improvement Associations should, therefore, make application at" once for their herds to be placed under the Special Pedigree Group Herd Test.
The fees for Special Pedigree Group Herd Test are those charged by the various Herd Improvement Associations plus additional fees'* approximately £1 for the Special Check test.
It is desired that all members of the New Zealand Friesian Association will co-operate with the- Council by placing their pedigree Friesian coavs on test. Such action would undoubtedly be of benefit to each individual member and particularly to the Friesian breed as a whole.
