Miss Norriss, of Messrs Bridgers Ltd. staff, has left for Wellington tot join per jjarents, Mr and Mrs L. E.. Norriss.
Captain C. H. Brebner, has returned after a month's training at Trentham Military School, to take command of the Home Guard in the Rotorua area which embraces Wlia-* katane.
Friends of Sapper O. D. Garawav of Whakatane who was listed as prisoner of Avar, will be interested to hear that he has written his family to the effect that he was captured with several thousand others who were awaiting boats to take them to safety. He is fit and well and is in camp in Germany,.;
Mr Jas. Turpin, of the local branch of the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Company, has received notice of his transfer to the Rotorua agency of the Company and leaves on Monday next to take up his duties.
Miss I. Sullivan has resumed duty at the local branch of the Union Bank of Australia after annual leave. Mr A. D. Mollison, of the staff, commenced his vacation yesterday leaving for Duncdin to visit his people. The Commercial Hotel was the venue of a particularly enjoyable dinner party on Monday evening, when Mr and Mrs P. Goutts entertained 24 guests at. a farewell dinner given in honour of their son, Sergeant Andrew Coutts, who recently returned to Whakatane on leave. The dining room tables were attractively decorated for the occasion, a feature being the autograph menu cards which had been especially prepared for the occasion by Mr McGregor. Among the number of toasts honoured were those of the "King," "Fighting Men Overseas," proposed by Mr A. D. O'Rourke, reply Mr R. G. Wilson; "The Air Force and Sgt Pilot Coutts" proposed by Mr W. S. Henderson, reply by Sgt Pilot Coutts; "The Host and Hostess, Mr and Mrs P. Coutts," proposed by Mr C. A. Timbs, reply by Mr P. Coutts. Following the dinner guests were entertained at a bright party at the residence of Sgt Pilot Coutts' sister, Mrs R. Trindall, Merritt Street.
