RING SHOT IN WORK
Ring Shot, who lias; not raced fov Some time, has been brought in after a spell and is again in work. The chestnut is being prepared by D. Hastings at Avondale, but is carrying a lot of condition, and will not be ready for some time. Hastings has also in Avork a fine-looking three year old filly by Bulandshar out of Korokio. Korokio is an Australian--bred mare by Redfern—Mori den.
A USEFUL TEAM Although he has not so far led in a winner this season, there is plenty of time 'to take' his turn and the Avondale trainer, G. Lindsay, lias n useful team in work, which includes Glen Abb, Clipper, Rex Maitland and Abbey Fox. The last-named is a two year old and is expected to be a bit above the average. / OUT OF ACTION Pleading, who had recently been doing satisfactory track work, has suffered from leg trouble 1 and another spell is likely for him.> His place in the Chokeborc stable has been filled by Winning Rival, who has been recommissioned after n
beneficial respite,
MAKING GOOD
Besiege, by General La tour —Riko
riko, is making good as: a hurdler. Second on Saturday at the Ohinenuiri mealing, he scored a win on Monday after making the running
throughout with 9.9 against General Ruse's 11.1 he was certainly well treated 011 the second day.,
A BRILLIANT M3LER
Up to a mile at near future' meetings Bronze Moth is going to be hard to beat. At the Ohinemuri meeting on Saturday he won bril-
liantly over seven furlongs and 6'o yards. On Monday he took part in a'nine furlong run, but the distance was just a little too far.
ENGLISH ST. LEGER WINNER The English St. Leger winner Sun Castle was described as one of the best looking yearlings of 1939. When the Doncaster yearling sales were cancelled Lord Portal took a half share in him with his breeder, Lady Chesterfield. He had two races late in his first season, and, although he
id not win, he was rated fourth in
the Free Handicap, being awarded 9.2, compared with 9.7 to the topweight, Poise. Sun Castle was one of the favourites for the Derby in June, but he could finish only sixteenth in a field of I£>. BACKING OF ALGERIAN Algerian, a poor performer in New Zealand, has been backed to win the Epsom-Metropolitan double for approximately £12,000, although, as long odds were available, the outlay was comparatively small, says a Sydney writer. Algerian, a live year old hay gelding, is by Beau Fere from Zarene. In New Zealand he has won four races, one at live furlongs and a half, two at six furlongs and one at nine furlongs. The commissioner was acting for the owners who al the moment would appear to be optimistic. The gelding, Avho has 7..1 Qnd 7.2 in the Epsom and Metropolitan, has yet to race in Sydney.
SUCCESSFUL TRIPS New Zealand horses or horses bred in New Zealand have done well in tllfc Epsom Handicap in the last 11 years. In that period winners haVe been Nightmarcli, Autopay, Silver Ring, Synagogue, Gold Rod and High Caste. In the last few years successful Metropolitan runners were Waikare, Sir Regent, Royal Chief and Beau Vitc. Accepting the betting market as a guide, the visitors will again be heard from in Sydnej' and Melbourne this year.
OUT OF LUCK
I Although not successful in his racing efforts lately Te Kawi'ti was topweight in the President's Handicap at the Ohinemuri meeting. With a No. 12 draw he was never able to hit the front and in the run to the post was well and truly pocketed. The Night Raid—Queen March representative will be seen to better advantage when the tracks become A WINNING STRAIN A fine type of racing thoroughbred Is the Gisborne owned Rich Blood. On the first day of the Ohinemuri meeting he Avon the Kerepeehi Handicap very convincingly, but failed to show similar dash in the Waitakaruru Handicap on the second. He is likely to run prominently at Ellerslie this month.
