Cabbage Trees in Bud. The countless cabbage trees on farm lands of the Bay of Plenty 1 arc now in the first stagesi of their season of flowering. Their crowns of swoird-shapecl leaves are parting to disclose' the large spikes of buds which will burst into innumerable flowers in a few weeks' time. These flowers provide nectar for insect life and later berries for the birds. Be-> cause of its vigorous growth, everywhere the cabbage tree or palm lily (its botanical name is cordyline Australis) is despised by most New Zealanders, although it is grown for its beauty in lands; overseas. Some people profess to be able to fortell 'the weather of summer by the manner in which the cabbage trees flower during spring.
