NOXIOUS WEEDS
KIKIXYU NOT INCLUDED
On information supplied by Mr J. W. Jones that Kikuyu grass was likely to be a serious menace to farmers, judging by experience in the Far North, the Auckland branch of the Farmers' Union wrote to the Minister of Agriculture asking thai it be declared a noxious weed.
The Minister has replied that this species of grass has. a value under certain conditions in the Dominion, and that he is, therefore, unable to accede to the request.
Dealing with the general question of the more rigkl enforcement of the Noxious Weeds Act requested by the Auckland Executive, the Minister stated that his department had appropriated large sums of money in recent years for the purpose of operating a scheme whereby substantial grants are made to County Councils to enable them to undertake noxious weeds eradication work on abandoned farms, and on farms of indigent owners.
