Dance Postponed,
The dance which was to have been held by the Ladies' District Farewell Committee in the King Street Hall on Saturday night has been postponed. Art Union Winners. In the "Gall and Collect" Art Union just drawn two prizes came to the Whakatane district. "Mother's Choice," of Poroporo, claims £10 and "Woodpulp," Whakatane, £5. Gisborne National Candidate. The Gisborne electorate selection committee of the National Party, meeting on Friday night, elected Captain E. R. Black, M.C., for nomination as the party candidate for the Gisborne seat in the event of general elections being held this year. Ignoring Pedestrian Crossing. "I want drivers to realise the seriousness of this offence," stated Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court at Rotarua, when a motorist was charged with failing to give way at a pedestrian crossing in the toAvn area. "Defendant will be fined £5 with costs 10s," he stated.
Asset to Rugby.
In view of the fact that the Pakeha v Maori Rugby match for the Jackson Shield was twice arranged this season and on both occasions failed to eventuate awing to lack of interest by players, the management committee of the Whakatane Union this week decided to recommend to "the incoming committee that the fixture be played early in the season in future in accordance with the rules; of the trophy.
Dairy Factory Assistants.
In the course of a conversation with a BEACON representative yesterdajr, Mr R. E,. Blair, Secretary the Rangitaiki Plains Dairy Co stated that dairy factory assistants are urgently required and that at present there are exceptional opportunities for boys anxious to gain promotion and attractive experience. Many of the Company's best men have volunteered and gone forward for war service and the Company is liable to lose even more experienced men. With men going overseas key positions become available more frequently than in normal times and youths keen to learn and with the will to work have a particularly good chance of progress and promotion. f rout Fry Planted. A total number of 840,000 trout fry had been planted in the' Rotorua conservation district during the past week, stated Mr A. Kean, Conservator of Fish and Game. 'Of these 380,000 had been sent to the Waio« eka and Gtara streams in the Bay of Plenty, Lake T'arawera and Lake Rotoiti. T'arawera fry numbering 60,000 sent to the Tongariro River, and 80,000 were sent to the Waihora and Waihana streams at Lake T'aupo. A total of 100,000 had been liberated in the Wanganui Riv-
