That the County Council is losing no time in furthering its decision to transfer unused loan moneys to the work of improving the Matata water reticulation is indicated by an advertisement in this issue which publicly announces its intention. The W.W.S.A. is responsible for the organisation of the event. VVhakatane Golf Club. A four-ball Stableford Bogey Hondicap will be played on Saturday next. Players will arrange own partners. On Sunday the finals of the Club Championship and Intermediate and Junior grades w T ill be played. Also the finals of the Clarke and Founders Cups. Gardens Suffer. The visitation of a frost on Monday morning causing considerable heartburning amongst local amateur gardeners who had ventured to plant for early crops. Some sections of the town escaped the frost, but others found tender young plants blackened and drooping. Labour Day. This month brings a holiday when on Monday 27 Labour Day falls. The due date is October 25, bvit this anniversary is always observed on the nearest Monday to the date. Already plans are being made by many, motorists in particular bearing in mind that petrol should be saved for the long week-end. Novel Dance. On Monday next, October 6', a novel dance is to be held an the Taneatua Hall, being organised to assist E.P.S. funds, and which is to take a novel form. The ladies are to take a basket containing anything they might consider suitable for supper for two. These baskets will be raffled and the male purchaser then joins the owner of the contribution for supper.

Heavy Fall of Hail

Gharacterstic of Whakatane a sudden and heavy isolated shower occurred at about 2 p.m. on Saturday last on this occasion producing large hail stones. The shower appeared to fall only on that part of the town on the northern side of the Rock and completely missed other areas. Some houses experienced the 1 heavy hail while others only a short distance away enjoyed bright and line weather.
