"ONLY ADVISORY"

POSITION OF MEAT BOARD

EFFECT OF WAR REGULATIONS

In a general discussion at last Executive meeting of the Auckland Farmers' Union the' position of the Meat Board from the point of view of the farming community was raised when a proposal came forward advocating the ward system of election.

I:t was contended that under present conditions there was little opportunity to maintain effective contact between the individual farmer and members of the Board. During the discussion a reply that was sent to the New Zealand Farmers' Union by the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Mr Barclay, on this same issue was read. It stated:

"To give effect to the resolution it would, as you know, be necessary to amend the Meat Control Act, and I feel that the present is an inopportune time for such legislation.' It may be stated also that the War Emergency Regulations remove from the 1 Meat Producers' Board any authority to control slaughtering, processing, or shipping etc. of meat, unci though the Government has frequently consulted the Board on matters pertaining to the industry and will continue to do so, the 1 Board's present functions are advisory only"
