NATIVE LAND RATES

LEVY ON CREAM CHEQUES Steps are being taken by the Whangarei County Council in an endeavour to- secure payment of a proportion of the rates due on native land in the county. The dairy companies operating in the county are to be asked for their co-operatio>n in the collection of one farthing per lb of butterfat from the various, Maori suppliers and the Maoris themselves arc to be re' quested to sign orders on the dairy companies agreeing to this deduction toward rates owing on native lands. It was stated at a meeting of the council that officers of the Native Department were prepared to assist the council in obtaining the' consent of Maoris to the deduction from the cream cheques. This scheme is already in operation in two other northern counties and is working satisfactorily.
