RIVER EROSION
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE ? A TICKLISH QUESTION Apparently nobody wants to be harnessed with the responsibility of the problem of erosion. At least that is the 1 conclusion) of members of the Chamber of Commerce who in a letter to the Public Works Department some time ago expressed concern at the undermining of the Whiakatane bridge approach and urged that protective measures should 1 be taken. The official reply from the district engineer, referred the writers to the Whakatane County Council. "This is the state of affairs we are up against," said the president at last Thursday's meeting. "The Borough has already written the County Council drawing its attention to the erosion. The County promptly writes back stating that it is willing to support the Borough in all its representations. We don't seem to get far." On the chairman's, motion it was decided to endeavour to follow the matter up still further by writing the Minister responsible and enquiring if the question of river erosion came under the new River Control Board.
