NEW YEAR'S EVE

CARNIVAL AS USUAL DECISION TO GARRY ON With only one speaker against it, the Whakatane Chamber of Commerce decided' to carry on with the promotion of the New Year's-BVe Carnival' upon something approaching the' same lines as last year's event. The matter was discussed at last Thursday's meeting. The secretary, Mr'G. Good, stating that it was the desire of the executive to get an expiession of opinion from members before tlie Carnival was actually ilecided upon. He had, contacted the original committee and most were willing to carry on with the proposal. £45 in Prize Money The committee, he said had spent £80J6s sd, the sum of £45 going in £19 to the organiser, and £16 aSsNin advertising, printing, postages end incidentals. On the revenue side, £51 was collected from the business {FTpi mentioned that this 3 r ear tha committee would have to take into account the more acute shortage of petrol and the effect of the 'blackout.' Messrs Smythe and Greke spoke strongly in favour of continuing with the carnival, which they claimed had been a wonderful success and to which the public would be looking forward this year.' More Worthy Objects Mr G. C. Southey said he could not support the suggestion of carrying on. The money raised could be : spent on more worthy objects. He favoured the continuation of all sports activities or organisations which made for the normal life of the community, but a Carnival at such a time was abnormal. It was not .right tot promote it at present. Mr Reeve- Gapning failed to see why people should not enjoy themselves on - New Year's Eve. As fo<" the money, he did not see how £10 or £50 would be missed for such an event when something like a couple of hundred was going out of the town ©very fortnight in the interests - of the Red Gross. In any case by New Year the country might have every Veason to be jubilant.

Carnival to be Held Mr Creeke formally moved that the Carnival be held, and that it be run fey the same committee with power to add. This was seconded by Mr Smythe, and carried.
