TELEPHONE EXCHANGE
SHORTAGE OF OPERATORS
ANSWER TO LOCAL CRITICISM
In answer to the Chamber of Commerce letter relative to the service of the local exchange 1 , the Postmaster has responded pointing out that the complaints raised by subscribers have been largely due to staff The P. and T. Department has, the letter states, lost no less than 3000 men who have enlisted for the army and there was an acute shortage of experienced operators. On the other hand he declared that in recent conversation a prominent businessman had said that he had noted little if any falling off in the efficiency of the exchange. There was however a slight technical fault which would be corrected. The president of the Chamber, Mr VV. Sullivan, summed up the position, by adding that in view of the position little could be done.
