LICENSING CASE
CHARGE AGAINST PROPRIETOR ' DISMISSED UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES The circumstances were found to be such that Mr E. L«- Walton, S.M. stated that he felt justified in dismissing a charge made against Alfred Hayter, proprietor of the Whakaane Hotel (Mr G. Otley) of supplying a native woman with liquor. The case was heard at the local Court on Tuesday and hinged on the status of the woman involved. Stressing that the proprietor was technically guilty as he should make definitely sure of a person's status, Mir Walton, said the circumstances were such that the proprietor could not reasonably be expected to have any knowledge of the status other than that generally accepted and; therefore, he did not consider he should be punished. The barman, Colin McKay, was served the liquor, was fined £2 with costs 10s.
