MAYOR CRITICISES LETTER WRITER REFERENCE TO AERODROME PROPOSAL
"There seems to be an impression about that the Borough Council has not pursued the establishment of an aerodrome. That is entirely incorrect —the council has been battling since 1923 to have an aerodrome in Whakatane," stated His Worship the Mayor on Monday night, adding that every effort had been made and these had not been relaxed at any time. Mr Barry continued to state that onty by continuing to press the matter would such a facility be obtained and, in view of this, the Council had never relaxed its efforts. Only reiccntly, too, the matter had been fully discussed at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. That meeting had been fully reported in the BEACON and he Avas at a loss to know how a correspondent to the press could state that public men had expressed pleasure that the liability of maintaining an aerodrome had not been incurred. "I cannot think who would say such a thing," he said. "lit certainly has never been stated by a member of this Council or of thei County Council eilier." His Worship's remarks were the result of Cr C. S. Armstrong stating that with the expansion of the Air Force the time was perhaps opportune to again make representations to the Public Works Department and it was dccided that the Minister once more be forwarded a request.
