ABATTOIR PROPOSAL

LOCATION CONSIDERED

BOROUGH MEETS COUNTY

COUNCIL

At Monday's meeting of the Whakatane Borough Council, the Mayoi - , Mr B. S. Barry, reported that on Saturday last a committee met members of the County Council with a view to discussing with them the proposed abattoirs. The day had not, however, been suitable for the inspection of sites and! a discussion only had taken place.

His Worship stated that he hod found from the discussion that thu 'County Council was definitely of the opinion that if Taneatua and cumbe were to be within the abai> toir district then the location should be at Awalteri. On the other hand and Health Inspectors m, y 7c present and their opinions had been that the chief necessity *vaa to have the abattoirs where a good Avater supply was nearby and wheii adequate drainage was offering such as a running stream. They also felt that the location should be as handy to the Borough as possible.

The Borough Council was of t!u> opinion that a situation in the Poroporo district would be most suitable, considering that ■ Awakeri was too far from the towji. Two of three local butchers were in agreement with this opinion. His Worship continued that if Edgecumbe was not included in the area it would not have a great bearing on the abattoirs as a great deal'of nict'.t ft that town was already killed at Whakatane. The Taneatua butcher he believed was anxious to join the i rea and of course Ohopc would have to be included, the County Council favouring the inclusion of the latter locality.

It was decided that the Borough Council's committee meet again to -Belect definite sites to be referred to the fall council, after which the ■County Council would again be met.
